Citadel of Herat Or Qala Ikhtyaruddin, Herat, Afghanistan, 1933 (c).

Citadel of Herat Or Qala Ikhtyaruddin, Herat, Afghanistan, 1933 (c). Herat, in the fertile valley of Hari-Rud, was settled as early as the sixth century B.C.E. A mound located to the north of the Old City, known as Kuhandazh (or Kohandez) may have been the site of the fort that Alexander the Great built in 330 B.C.E. following his conquest of the Achaemenid city known as Artacoana or Aria. Herat was ruled by the Seleucids, Parthians, Kushans, Sasanians, Hephthalites, Umayyads, Taherids, Saffarids and Samanids until the tenth century, by which time the square fortified city was already established.  Located half a kilometer to the south of Kuhandaz and aligned with the cardinal axes, the walled city described by early Arab geographers had four gates leading into crossing commercial avenues and a square citadel (qal'a) adjoining the northern city wall. This citadel, which has been suggested as another possible site for Alexander's fort, is known today as the Citadel of Herat or

Kalab Ali Khan, Nawab of Rampur, 1870.

Kalab Ali Khan, Nawab of Rampur, 1870. Photo by Bourne & Shepherd. The Nawabs of the princely state of Rampur (now part of U.P state of India) were descendants of Ali Muhammad Khan Rohilla (died in 1748). It is generally acknowledged that Ali Muhammad Rohilla was not Pashtun by birth. He was a Hindu Indian boy (Jat, Ahir or Rajput) adopted as son by Daud Khan (a mercenary from Pakhtunkhwa). However all the 18th century sources refer to Ali Muhammad Khan and his sons as "Afghan" (Pashtun) and "Rohilla" (Pashtun) which indicate that Ali Muhammad Khan and his sons identified as Pashtuns , spoke Pashto and had Pashtun manners and customs. Anandram Mukhlis who saw Ali Muhammad Khan Rohilla in 1743, describes him as a man of medium height with a fair complexion, blooming face and open forehead, about forty years old,  but looking youthful and dauntlessly brave. In 1815 Mountstuart Elphinstone noted that Pashto was still spoken in Rampur. In late 19th and 20th century

Mir Alam (a Kohistani Tajik) in his summer dress, 1841.

Mir Alam (a Kohistani Tajik) in his summer dress, 1841. Painting by James Rattrey. Mir Alam belonged to a band of infamous Tajik highway robbers, who infested the Ghorband pass (in Parwan province, Afghanistan) and levied blackmail on every thing passing through their mountain defiles. The band was commanded by a chief called Hassan. When British occupied Kabul, Hassan approached the British political agent William Macnaghten and offered to bring him the head of Amir Dost Muhammad Khan Barakzai who was then hovering about Nijraw (in Kapisa province, Afghanistan) and the Ghorbund Pass. Macnaghten turned down the offer but afterwards Hassan and his bandits were enlisted in the newly raised 'Kohistan rangers' which was commanded by British officers. On 3 November 1841, the troops of Kohistan rangers at Kahdarrah (about 20 miles north west of Kabul) revolted and killed their British officers Lieutenant Richard Maule and Lieutenant Wheeler.
