Urdu Info about Dir State. دیر کے لوگوں کا خیال ہے کہ یہاں پرانے زمانے میں مشرکین کی عبادت گاہیں تھیں۔ دیر کے معنی عربی میں خانقاہ کے ہیں۔ بعد میں یہ لفظ، فارسی اور اردو میں بھی در آیا۔ اسی وجہ سے اس علاقے کا نام دیر، (خانقاہ) پڑ گیا جو مرور زمانہ کے ساتھ دیر (Dir) ہو گیا۔ دیر چھ سنسکرت میں بلند اور طویل کے معنوں میں آتا ہے۔ مشہور لغت شناس خالد احمد کا خیال ہے کہ دیر بلند و بالا پہاڑوں سے گھرا ہوا ہے۔ اسی وجہ سے دور سنسکرت میں یہ نام پڑ گیا۔ جو وقت کے ساتھ ساتھ دیر کھ سے دیر بن گیا۔ پشتو اکیڈیمی کے ڈائریکٹر جناب محمد نواز طاہر لکھتے ہیں کہ قدیم کا فرستان کے علاقے میں دیر بھی شامل تھا جہاں کے لوگ مختلف معبودوں کی پوجا کرتے تھے ۔ حتی کہ ان میں ارواح پرستی بھی تھی۔ ان کے ابوالا باء کا نام دیہر تھا جس کے مرنے کے بعد اسے دیوتا کا مقام مل گیا۔ دیر کے نام پر یہ علاقہ بھی دیہر مشہور ہو گیا، جو بعد میں دیر رہ گیا۔ چونکہ پشتو میں ہائے ہوڑ ھ کا تلفظ نہیں ہے۔ اس وجہ سے دیہر دیر بنا بعید از قیاس نہیں ہے۔ ڈاکٹر وی۔ ایس اگر والا نے دیر

 The Sartor Faqir (bareheaded) also known as "Mullah Mastan , Mullah Mastana,Lewanai Faqir" in Pashto and by the British as "The Great Fakir" or "Mad Faqir", "Mad Faqir of Swat" or the "Mad Mullah".
