Dr. Farman Fateh Puri لفظ ہندو کی وضاحت لفظ ہندو ابتداً صرف ایک جغرافیائی اصطلاح تھی اور زمانہ قدیم میں اس سے مراد وہ خطۂ زمین تھا جو سات دریاؤں یعنی ستلج، بیاس، راوی، چناب، جہلم، سندھ اور سرسوتی سے سیراب ہوتا تھا اس خطے کا نام ان سات دریاؤں کی رعایت سے شروع میں سپتہ سندھو تھا سنسکرت میں سپتہ کے معنی ہیں سات اور سندھو کے معنی ہیں زمین، علاقہ یا دیش قدیم ایرانیوں نے سپتہ سندھو کو ہفتہ ہندو کر لیا کیونکہ سنسکرت کا سین ان کے یہاں عام طور پر ھائے ھوز سے بدل جاتا ہے چنانچہ بہت سے قدیم سنسکرت الفاظ مثلاً شانتی، واسا، سوما اور اسورا وغیرہ قدیم ایرانی میں علی الترتیب ھانتی، واھا، ھوما اور اھورا کی شکل میں ملتے ہیں یہی سپتہ سندھو کے ساتھ ہوا پہلے یہ ہفتہ ہندو ہوا، پھر مختصر ہو کر ہندو رہ گیا چنانچہ قدیم ایرانیوں کے نزدیک ہندو کسی مذہب یا قوم کا نہیں بلکہ ایک جغرافیائی حد بندی کا نام تھا اور اس کی حدود کے اندر رہنے والے سارے باشندوں کو ہندو کہتے تھے لغات میں لفظ ہندو کے معنی ڈاکو، غلام، چور اور سیاہ رنگ کے بھی ملتے ہیں شیخ سعدی نے گلستان کی ایک
