When I first met Mark, I was captivated by his vision for how technology could connect people and bring the world closer together. In this letter, Mark sets out how he believes the next evolution of the internet – what's known as the metaverse – can help people connect and share experiences in richer and more meaningful ways. We believe it can unlock new opportunities for people and spark new ideas and possibilities we haven't yet imagined.
It's a bold vision, but it's also an extension of the same fundamental idea that has driven our work from day one. By helping to build the metaverse, we can help people connect, build communities and express themselves in new and exciting ways, bringing the world closer together.
This next phase of the internet marks a new phase for our company. Our new name – Meta – reflects our commitment to this exciting future.
The metaverse isn't something any one company can or should build alone. It's a collaborative effort and everyone has a role to play. So, we’ll work with experts in government, industry, civil society and academia to think through issues and opportunities in the metaverse. We also need to involve the human rights and civil rights communities from the start to ensure these technologies are built in a way that’s safe, inclusive and empowering.
I’m so grateful to all our partners who’ve helped make our platforms an incredible place to connect and look forward to doing even more together in the metaverse.
