Attan. Traditional Pashtun Afghan Dance. What Is Attan For Afghans?
The Attan dance is one of the many traditional and national dances of Afghanistan with ancient roots. It has Eastern Iranian Zoroastrian origins and has changed over thousands of years. Originally, the ancestors of modern Pashtuns and other Iranian ethnicites performed .. similar rituals and dances around fires. With time, the ritual was used for other occasions & as motivation before war.
The mythical Iranian king Jamshid enjoyed similar dances with his warriors. When the Greeks governed Afghanistan for centuries, they intermingled with .. the local population and had a similar dance dedicated to Athena, the goddess of warfare and wisdom.
The war dance was highly respected by the Greek philosophers. Socrates said: "Those best at dancing are also those best at war" and Plato described dancing .. as "a gift from the gods". The Greek warrior dance consists of the dancers pretending to be in battle, either defending or attacking.
Of all the different variations of the Attan dance, the Khattak version is the closest to the Greek warrior dance and is still performed .. with swords. There are similar dances amongst other Iranic people in Iran. Today, Afghans of all ethnicities perform the Attan and Qarsak dances at weddings, festivals and other joyful occasions.
Attan dances can last several hours and are difficult to perform correctly .. without thorough training. The ancient Attan dance, Qarsak dance and other national dances of Afghanistan are the cultural heritage of Uzbeks, Tajiks, Hazaras, Pashtuns and all other ethnicites of Afghanistan.
