The story behind Lieutenant General Zahid Ali Akbar Khan’s middle name is fascinating. His great-grandfather’s name was Mohammad Hussain. He was a soldier in the British Army and participated in the 1857 Mutiny against the British forces. 

After the mutiny was subdued, Mr. Hussain evaded the British for 15 years by eloping and living as an outlaw. He resurfaced after 15 years as “Ali Akbar” Khan and once again joined the British Indian Army in 7 Haryana Lancers. He rose to the rank of subedar major, the highest rank that an Indian soldier could attain at that time. Since then everyone in his family decided to use “Ali Akbar” as their middle name.
