Mao Zedong , "On the just solution of contradictions among the people" (1958)
"People all over the world are now debating whether or not a third world war will break out. Also on this question we must be mentally prepared and do some analysis.
We are firmly in favor of peace and against war. However, if the imperialists insist on starting another war, we need not be afraid. Our attitude on this question is the same attitude towards any disorder: first, we are against it; second, we must not be afraid of them. World War I was followed by the birth of the Soviet Union with 200 million inhabitants. World War II was followed by the emergence of the socialist camp with a combined population of 900 million. If the imperialists insist on launching a world war, it is certain that several hundred million more men will turn to socialism, and then there will be less space on earth for the imperialists; the collapse of the entire existing imperialist structure is also possible."
