Nizam Mukram Jah, who inherited a property worth 250 billion, died in a two-room flat

Nizam Mukram Jah, who inherited a property worth 250 billion, died in a two-room flat

The 8th Nizam Nawab Mir Barkat Ali Khan Walashan Makram Jah Bahadur of the erstwhile Nizam Shahi Sultanate of Hyderabad passed away this week in Istanbul.

Makram Jah was 89 years old and was laid to rest with full state honors at the Khandari graveyard of the historic Makkah Masjid in Hyderabad last Wednesday evening.

A statement issued by his office said, "It is with great sadness that it is reported that the 8th Nizam of Hyderabad, Hon'ble Nawab Mir Barkat Ali Khan Walashan Makram Jah Bahadur, has passed away in Istanbul, Turkey."  According to his last wish, he will be buried in his birthplace i.e. Hyderabad.

According to the press note sent to the BBC by Najaf Ali Khan, a member of the Nizam Shahi family, "The Telangana government performed the last rites with full police honours."

All arrangements for performing the last rites were made with the support of the Telangana Government, Nazah Hashtam's family and trustees.

 Who was Makram Jah?

Makram Jah was the grandson of Mir Usman Ali Khan Bahadur, the last Nizam to rule Hyderabad.  Mir Usman Ali Khan ruled Hyderabad till 1948.  He was the seventh system.

According to a report in the Indian newspaper 'The Hindu', Usman Ali Khan neglected his sons and named his grandson Mukram Jah as his successor.

According to this report, after the coronation ceremony in April 1967, Makram Jah formally became the eighth Nizam.  The coronation ceremony took place in Chaumahla Mahal.

After that he moved from India to Australia.  After staying there for some time, he made Turkey his abode.  Later they settled there permanently.

 Endless wealth is gone

As the successor of the seventh Nizam, Mukram Jah became the owner of the world's "greatest treasure", according to the Hyderabad-based daily "Siyast".

But his lavish lifestyle, neglect of maintenance of estates and royal palaces, and his habit of lavish spending on expensive jewelry cost him all his wealth.

Mukram Jah inherited a property worth around 25 thousand crore rupees and was only 30 years old when this inheritance was transferred to him.  Due to his life-long habit of eating sitting down and his lavish lifestyle, he had to live in a two-room flat for the last days of his life.

However, with the death of Makram Jah, a historical legacy has come to an end.

The Nizam Shahi Empire in Hyderabad began in 1724 with Nizam Mulk.  The Nizam dynasty ruled the Hyderabad Deccan from 1724 to 1948.

Telangana Chief Minister Chandrasekhar Rao has expressed his condolences on the death of Makram Jah.  His office tweeted that the eighth system worked for the poor.  His last rites will be performed with full official honors in honor of his work in the field of education and health.

Who was Mukram Jah's grandfather i.e. 7th Nizam?

Asif Jah Muzaffar-ul-Mulk Sir Usman Ali Khan, who was very loyal to the British government, became the ruler of the princely state of Hyderabad in 1911.

On 22 February 1937, Time magazine published a cover story on Mir Usman Ali, calling him the 'richest man in the world'.

The seventh Nizam also had a diamond of 282 carats.  It is one of the largest diamonds in the world.  According to those who saw it, this diamond was the size of a small lemon.

Nizam used to hide it in a soap box to protect it from thieves.  Sometimes they used this big diamond as a paperweight

Hyderabad was one of the three princely states that refused to accede to India after India's independence.  However, the Government of India annexed the state in 1948 after police action.

After the surrender of the Nizam's army in Hyderabad, the government of India took into custody Qasim Rizvi and Laiq Ahmad, supporters of the Nizam.  Laiq Ahmad escaped from custody and reached Bombay (now Mumbai) airport and from there flew to Pakistan.

The Government of India has done no harm to the 7th Nizam and his family.  The seventh Nizam Mir Usman Ali Khan and his family were allowed to stay in their own palace.

 Hyderabad was annexed by India

The state of Hyderabad was the 562nd princely state to join India.  An agreement was reached between the Government of India and the Seventh Nizam on 25 January 1950 under which the Government decided to give him a privy purse of Rs 4,285,714 per annum.

The seventh Nizam was also the Governor of Hyderabad till November 1956.  According to the reorganization carried out by the Government of India, the old system of state was divided into three parts and three new states were formed and the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra came into existence.  Recently a new state Telangana emerged from Andhra Pradesh and Hyderabad is its capital.

The seventh Nizam died on February 24, 1967.
