On the Eve of Eid

On the Eve of Eid
.
.Poem by: Ab'rahman Rahmani
English rendering: Hamayun Masaud
.
Eid song crackles on the age-old radio
Thoughtful mother has readily dyed eggs in a variety of colors
In excitement, children sit upright on bed-cushions with their new shoes on
.
Father, who has just returned from the mosque commanded:
‘Ensure to send tea to the mosque at the break of dawn’
One of the boys is mad at the tailor
Complains: ‘The tailor purposely missed to stitch side pocket to my kurta
.
“Besu” making the Henna paste, jocundly murmurs songs to herself
As if the demon-sprit of wantonness has taken possession of her
The aroma of Henna is spread throughout the room,
A subtle state of euphoria prevails in the environment
.
“Besu” looks at the first letter of her lover’s name
Embossed (with Henna) on the palm of her hand
And playfully makes funny faces at it
Tinkling her green bangles in rhythmic succession
She again casts a hurried glance at her palm,
And fondly murmurs: ‘Woe to you Mirgulia!’
‘Your appalling naivety is killing me!’
 .
