Selected by Qaisar Khan from the book “Bacha Khan Aur Khudai Khidmatgari”

Translation Title: The Imaginary Pashtunistan in the Real World – A Candid Conversation in Kabul

“I had arrived in Kabul by road from London on the day of the Pashtunistan Day celebration. I was invited to attend the program which King Zahir Shah organized annually. I was exhausted and decided to rest on a chair during the event. Just as I sat, the infamous Tajik bureaucrat Rohullah Farhadi—a sly figure from the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs—got up from his seat and sat next to me. I didn’t appreciate it, knowing he wouldn’t let me rest.”

    A Conversation Begins

“He asked me, ‘Why have you abandoned the Pashtunistan cause and joined Pakistani politics?’—clearly pointing towards my presidency of the National Awami Party (NAP).

I smiled and replied with a counter-question: ‘What is the actual purpose and benefit of celebrating Pashtunistan Day?’

Farhadi grew uneasy but didn’t answer. Instead, he asked, ‘Why don’t you people rise up for Pashtunistan?’

I replied, ‘If I convince Indira Gandhi to attack Pakistan and engage its army on the eastern front, would you attack from this side and raise the flag of Pashtunistan at Attock via Torkham Gate?’

He nervously shifted in his seat: ‘No, no, Afghanistan cannot do that.’

‘Fine,’ I said, ‘Then provide arms and resources to the Pakistani tribal regions. Send your army masked as tribal fighters and at least initiate action by occupying FATA?’

He scratched his head and murmured, ‘Maazrat Mekhwaham… Afghanistan can’t do that either.’

    The Harsh Reality

‘Then how will Pashtunistan be formed? By delivering speeches, celebrating festivals, and airing songs on “Sadai Pashtunistan Radio”?’ I asked.

With eyes lowered, Farhadi replied, ‘No... but you people will have to struggle for Pashtunistan yourselves.’

I said, ‘So I should mobilize the youth of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Pakistan Army will attack and massacre us, and when I call for your help, you’ll raise your head from across the hills and say—“Sorry Khan Sahib, international laws prevent us. We can only offer political and diplomatic support.”’

‘Will your press releases and diplomatic condolences save us from the wrath of the Pakistani military?’

    The Verdict

He stayed silent. I continued, ‘You have an army, a government, international clout, and yet you can’t help, but expect us to sacrifice our children?’

    Still, he remained silent.

‘As for me entering Pakistani politics—let me be clear. We will struggle within Pakistan using democratic, constitutional, and political means. We will contest elections, make alliances with Sindhis, Baloch, Punjabis, or religious parties. This is our internal matter. You don’t need to worry.’”
